The Mathers Foundation
The G. Harold and Leila Y. Mathers Foundation, established in 1983 in Santa Barbara, California, honors the philanthropic vision of G. Harold Mathers (1901–1976) and Leila Young Mathers (1905–1980). Known for their generosity, the Mathers supported local initiatives, hospitals, and scholarships for medical students and envisioned a legacy to help others and support sustainable charitable causes.
The Foundation was initially funded from assets related to the C. W. Post estate, including mineral interests, ranches, and farmland in northwest Texas. The assets have been managed since inception by the Meyer Handelman Company, LLC.
While initially focused on basic medical research, the Foundation has evolved to embrace innovative basic research with translational implications, aiming to bring discoveries closer to clinical application. The Foundation remains an independent, permanently endowed private organization. Headquartered in Rye Brook, New York, the Foundation’s operations are guided by a board of trustees, ensuring that Mrs. Mathers’ vision and commitment to advancing medical research continues to shape its mission.
